There was a thriving grape culture in this region even thousands of years ago.
The climate is balanced, free from the extremities of weather. Frost damage is not seen here. The large water surface of Lake Balaton has a very advantageous, moderating effect on the climate. There are no excessively hot summers or extremely severe winters.
As regards the soils, grape production occurs mostly on brown soils and on brown forest soils mixed with alluvial clay. The fertility of the soil, formed on eroded basalt, is exceptionally good (potassium, magnesium and micro elements).
Today grape is grown using elevated methods of cultivation such as umbrella-cultivation, Moser-type high cordon, single curtain.
In this region they grow almost exclusively (99 %) white wine varieties. Of the 16 types planted there are some traditional ones (Keknyelu, Olasz Riesling, Szurkebarat) world varieties (Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Rajnai Riesling, Pinot Blanc) and newly cultured types (Zenit). The suitable red grape varieties are the Cabernet Sauvignon, the Pinot Noir and the Kekfrankos. The wines here are aromatic, fruity and delicately acidic.
The Olasz Riesling, which has a 70% share of the planted varieties is exceedingly harmonious and has an aftertaste reminiscent of almonds. The Szurkebarat has an intensive and lasting bouquet and flavour, and is often marketed as a sweet wine. The famous Keknyelu wine is dry, vigorous, and has an acidic character.
