Baja
Baja - Description
Lying in the fork of the Danube and its tributary, the Sugovica, Baja is a port-town in which a number of nationalities are represented. Germans, Croats and Serbs have been living here in harmony with the Hungarians for centuries. As you walk the winding streets, you can still feel the nostalgic, evocative atmosphere of a small town.
The former wealth of the trading town, famous for its fairs, is witnessed by its decorated buildings. The neo-Renaissance edifice of the Town Hall (1 Szentharomsag Square), the Rococo altar and stalls of the Franciscan Church (1 Bartok B. Street), the altarpiece of the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul (Toth Kalman Square), the iconostasis of the Serbian Church (Miklos Street), and the Synagogue, converted to a library (9 Munkacsy Street). The exhibition showing the 300-year history of the town and the history of fishing is housed in the museum (Deak F. Street) named after Istvan Turr, the architect of the Corinth Canal, who was born here. The island of the Sugovica is a real tourist paradise. There is a swimming pool and tennis courts.
The town also operates an important port on the Rhine-Main-Danube route. The famous fish soup of Baja was mentioned in the Guiness Book of Records. It is cooked on second Saturday of July in 2000 cooking pots simultaneously in the town centre, which has a characteristic Mediterranean atmosphere.
