The arboretum, which is situated at the foot of the Gellert Hill, is divided into two parts by Menesi street. The main sight of the Upper Garden is the flourishing of 40 thousand bulbs (mainly narcissi) that are planted under the trees in spring time. The protected location of the Lower Garden makes the survival of such warm-needed plants possible like: Chinese hemp-palms, Japanese medlars and evergreen Lily trees. They can live through the winter without any covering within the protection of buildings and retaining walls. It is worth visiting the arboretum when the Japanese ornamental cherry-trees or the lilac bushes are flowering but it is also beautiful when leaves are colouring. The land of the arboretum (6 hectares) mainly serves the horticultural education at the university.
Terrain
Paths with asphalt covering can rarely be found in the Lower Garden and there are quite a lot of stairs in this area. From the lower parking place, you can get to the elevator (in building 'K') unhindered, which takes you to the collection of ornamental cherry-trees where from you can reach building 'A' and Szüret street on a path covered with asphalt. The Upper Garden can be passed round on asphalt, though the covering is in bad condition and one has to reckon with considerable level differences.
