The fortress on the top of Gellert Hill was built by Haynau after the defeat of the Hungarian Revolution in 1848-49, between 1850 and 1854. The Citadel was designed by Emanuel Zitta, a lieutenant general, and built by Kasselik Ferenc and Zitterbath Matyas. The building is 220 m long and 45-60 m wide.
