In this wine region the tradition of grape and wine production is hundreds of years old. Even before the Turkish occupation (14th - 15th century) local wine was well-known and exported. Around this time the characteristic grape types (Kovidinka, Kadarka, Ezerjo, Piros Szlanka, etc.) were established, which have left their mark to this day.
The climatic characteristics of the region - particularly the temperature and light - distinguish it from the climatic region of the Nagyalfold (The Great Plains). It is classed as a distinctly warm and light region, but lacking rain. The winter is often severe, without snow. The land is slightly undulating or flat plain. The black or humous soils, originating from the Danube, are limy, while on the lower Tisza-region the soil is acidic.
From the region?s traditional varieties (e.g. Kovidinka) they make a pleasant, rather lean, fresh table wine. The yield of the quality white wine grapes (Chardonnay, Rajnai (Rhine) Riesling, Olasz (Italian) Riesling, Zold Veltelini) and the red wine grapes (Kadarka, Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon, Kekfrankos) is suitable for making quality wines. The "Csongradi Kadarka" and the "Pusztamergesi Olasz Riesling" are well known and have a good reputation.
