The ancient city of Csongrad lies on the south side of the Great Hungarian Plain and the north part of Csongrad County where the Tisza and the Koros rivers join together.
Csongrad existed before the Hungarian settlement in the 9th century. King Saint Stephan established a county here, and its name was coming from the fortress (castle) of Csongrad. The centre of the old town is the Belvaros (Inner town), which shows the atmosphere of the Turkish world with the protected folklore houses, country house, museum house, and the houses in which people still live - as anywhere else - their everyday life.
The Saint Rokus church can be found on the edge of the Inner town. It was built in 1722 on a basis of a Turkish mosque.
The unique feature of the pleasant town in wooded country at the junction of the rivers Tisza and Koros, is the town centre, consisting of protected fishermen�s-houses. The thirty thatched houses are folk monuments built in the 19th century. Not far from here the Koros-torok open-air pool and recreation centre welcomes its visitors: the sand is smooth, suitable also for children and the water is shallow. The Csongrad Museum House (1 Gyoker Street) is fishermen�s-house with open chimney, oven and painted furniture. The Laszlo Tari Museum (2 Iskola Street) houses a collection of local history.
