"The prairies billow like a sea" - wrote the great Hungarian poet, Sandor Petofi, who was a lover of the Hungarian Puszta and the river Tisza. The river gives life to the sandy country and fish for the inimitably delicious fish soup made here. The number of sunshine hours is the highest in the country and the abundantly flowing thermal water helps people who wish to recuperate. The Southern Great Plain tourist region is the sunniest, warmest part of Hungary. It is the land of broad rivers, the land of the Danube, the Tisza, the Maros and the Koros rivers. It is the region of alkaline lakes containing unequalled natural resources. It is a paradise for lovers of fishing and water sports. It is the meeting point for those devoted to horseback tours, village and farm excursions. It is the "Mecca" of those seeking healing and regeneration, thanks to its vast array of inexhaustible thermal springs. All these are part of the Southern Great Plain.
National parks and nature reserves draw travellers with their bird sanctuaries, all waiting to be discovered. Intermingling sand dunes blend into each other, and the natural atmosphere of intact grasslands, reeds, the unaffected world of backwaters, tiny white farms, well-kept pastures, and rolling wheat fields provide a unique scene for those visiting here.
Thousand-year-old monasteries, villas and castles dating back hundreds of years, and masterpieces of folk architecture await those interested.
Memorials and ruins that have become tourist spectacles can be found in the Southern Great Plain from before the Turkish conquest of the 16th century, while the architectural methods still used today come from the period of re-settlement and restoration after the Turkish.
The landmarks which neither the centuries, nor the Tartars, nor the Turks could wipe off the landscape are the "kun mounds". These earth pyramids protruding from the surface of the plain were most probably the burial palaces of the leaders of early bronze-age herdsmen tribes and their family members.
From among the hundreds of well-known "kun mounds", the Godeny mound of Bekesszentandras stands out because of its height, as do the largest of the peacock-eye system "kurgan group" in the region of Dombegyhaza, the eight-and-a-half-metre high Kriptaj hill and the middle member of the group, the Attila mound, which has become well-known for the legend about the coffin of the Hun leader located on the spot.
The alternating landscape of puszta and river valleys is also home to several ethnic minorities in Hungary, where their traditions and customs are preserved and cultivated. The visitor can see and enjoy the rich and living Slovak, Romanian, German, Serb, Croat, and Romany folklore, and after the excursions, relaxation of a different sort awaits the traveller: Southern Great Plain cuisine has everything to offer from Csaba sausage ("kolbász") and Baja fish soup, to fine local wines.
