Known as the "Hungarian Versailles", the U-shaped palace with its Baroque and Rococo courtyard and wrought-iron gate is the third most important building complex in Hungary and, at the same time, an outstanding value in the Fertő World Heritage area.
Miklos "The Glorious" Esterhazy converted the former twenty-room hunting castle into the family's favourite dwelling place. The Baroque ornaments of the facade, the symmetrical structure, the glamorously decorated 126 rooms and the luxurious pieces of furniture have always amazed the visitors coming to the castle.
The curved pompous stairs lead to the Music Hall where Haydn's masterpieces were presented, quite often in the presence of the royal family. A retrospective exhibition commemorates Haydn's work. Every year a series of programmes pay tribute to the memory of one of the greatest musicians of the 18th century.
