Franciscan Monastery and Church - Gyongyos

The Monastery guards one of the libraries in the country that has continuously increased its valuable collection since before the times of the Turkish invasion. Among the famous monuments of Gyongyos is the Franciscan church and monastery, founded around the year 1370.
The abutments of the church, its Gothic windows, multisided sanctuary and the steeple, all bear the signs of Gothic style, in spite of the Baroque renovations of the 18th century. The legendary general of the Rakoczi-led Hungarian war of independence, Janos Bottyan, known as Vak (Blind) Bottyan lies in its crypt.
Hungary's only library operated by a religious order since the Middle Ages is located in the Monastery erected between 1701 and 1730. Two hundred of its 14 000 volumes are incunabula.
