To the east of Hortobagy, many village names begin with "hajdu". The "hajdu" people were forever on the move driving herds, they never put themselves under the yoke of any landlord. They were invited here by Istvan Bocskai, prince of Transylvania, at the beginning of the 17th century. He gave them the land called the Hajdusag today. The eleven settlements of the region made up the Association of Hajdu Towns. All of its members have valued natural, architectural and artistic treasures. The relics of the “hajdu” past are shown to the visitors in their museums.
