In Ipolytarnoc, in the Fossil Natural Park can be found the third richest site in the world for fossilised footprints. Today visitors can see the teeth of 24 species of sharks, of crocodiles and dolphins, fossilised trees, the imprints of more than 5000 subtropical exotic leaves and footprints of 2000 animals.
Places giving accurate images of truly ancient past do not grow on trees. The site with a European Diploma in the northern part of Nograd county is among these few ones. The buried treasures of the "prehistoric Pompei" have been unearthed after 20 million years. The walls of ravines and eroded slopes reveal shark teeth, fossilised trees, prints of leaves and ancient animals, all well preserved. Visitors get professional guiding from experts presenting the world-famous relics along a geological study path.
Open: April to October,
Tuesday to Sunday: 9am. - 4pm., Monday: closed
November to March: 9am. - 3pm.
