Kiskunfelegyhaza
Kiskunfelegyhaza - Description
One of the best works of Hungarian Art Nouveau is the Town Hall, with walls ornamented by colourful stone flowers and a roof of glazed tiles (1 Kossuth L. Street). The ceramic decor comes from the famous Zsolnay factory of Pecs. Two great personalities of Hungarian literature are also connected with this city: the great Hungarian poet Sandor Petofi (1823-1849), the ‘fiery bard’ of liberty and revolution lived in the Swan House as a small child.
You can see the souvenirs of his family in the Petofi Memorial House (7 Petofi Street) and there is also a statue of him in the city. The learned museum director Ferenc Mora was born in house no. 19 of the street that was later named after him. In his prose works Mora described the life and lot of poor people. His memorial museum shows his personal objects, the furrier’s workshop of his father and his mother’s kitchen.
The Kiskun Museum (9 Hollo L. Street) is a prison museum with a four-sail windmill in the courtyard. One of the most beautiful architectural monuments in this city is the Baroque church called the ‘Visitation of Our Lady’ erected in the 18th century (Beke Square), where you can see a Rococo-style pulpit and side altars. For relaxation, it is suggested you visit the swimming pool of the city where the atmosphere is always cheerful (1 Blaha L. Square).
