Town Hall - Hungary sights - Miskolc

According to the sources at our disposal the town hall has always been at its present place which today is the building site marked 8 Városház square. The former town hall was constructed in 1762 and was completed in one year. It stood there in its original shape for 80 years.
The building was so damaged during the earthquake and fire that the building of a new town hall commenced in 1870. The first part of the present complex was handed over on 16th January 1871 in less than nine months after completion of its reconstruction. Among its several functions it is worth noting that this was tobacco stock exchange, the headquarters of the army several times and the police were also stationed there. Moreover, the Lutheran Law Academy, which came here from Eperjes, used to work here (in the building of the courtyard presently marked "1st").
Stylish musical programmes are organized in the third yard of the Town Hall (in the case of bad weather in the assembly hall) within the framework of "Town Hall Evenings".
