If we stop at the highest peak of Hungary, at the 1014-meter high Kékesteto and we look down on the land below us, we can see a wonderful view. Mountain peaks covered with forests line up as far as the horizon and basins eroded by rivers lie among them. We seem to see rows of wine-plants on the gentle slopes and the steeples glimmering through the distance indicate the workmanship of men. We rightly feel: Every step brings new experience!
To reach the northern Hungarian region’s closest city, we only have to travel sixty kilometers from Budapest. If we want to see its farthest boundaries, then our journey will take us to the banks of the Tisza river.
The region’s southern border is the Alfold, while Slovakia borders it to the north. The region’s castles from the Middle Ages, its 16th and 17th century palaces, numerous churches, villages famous for their folkloric traditions and handicrafts, as well as famous historic towns are cradled amongst the five mountain ranges that we find there – the Cserhat, Matra, Bukk, Cserehat and Zemplen ranges.
The highest hills of Hungary cross the northern part of the country diagonally form the Danube to the river Tisza. The 600 – 900-metre, high rides of the Cserhat, Matra, Bukk and the Zempleni mountains hold incomparable natural and cultural historical treasures.
UNESCO considered the stalactites of the Baradla Cave and the village centre of Holloko to be worth preserving as a part of the World Heritage, and protects the primordial relics of Ipolytarnoc and the biosphere reserve of the Bukk Plateau.
The folk art of this region also has extraordinarily colourful forms :the Paloc embroideries and the Matyo costumes are unparalleled in the country. The health spas in Bogacs and Bukkszek are visited by rheumatic patients.
