The 15th century Calvinist Church of St George (24 Bathory Street) is the Gothic masterpiece of the learned architect, the Franciscan Father Janos. Originally a single-nave Catholic church it was built as the burial-place of the Bathory family, with Gothic vaulted ceiling, richly carved capitals and glass windows. The secret of the famous Nyirbator concerts is the pleasant sound of the organ and the excellent acoustics of the church. The wooden bell tower (the largest and most beautiful in the country) next to the church is a masterpiece of Hungarian woodcarving. The original furnishing of the church including the wonderful Renaissance carved benches, can be seen in the National Museum in Budapest.
The Minorite Roman Catholic Church (19 Karolyi street) is a Gothic building transformed into a Baroque style church, the pulpit and altars of which represent the peak of Hungarian Baroque wood-carving. However, the most beautiful ornament of the church is the masterpiece depicting the Passion, the Krucsay Wooden Altar named after the person who commissioned it. The collection of the Istvan Bathory Museum is in the Baroque Minorite Monastery (15 Karolyi M. Street). It contains local history with relics from the Renaissance, including a choir stall from the year 1511 and the records of aristocratic families.
