Nyiregyhaza

Nyiregyhaza - Description

A quiet, friendly town where the squares are decorated with flowers and the well-tended parks offer pleasant walks. Visitors are welcomed with high-quality musical entertainment and a lively cultural life.
In the centre of the town a Baroque Lutheran Church (Lutheran Square) stands with carillon on its front designed by an Italian architect.
The most important building defining the image of the towns were designed by the master of Hungarian Eclecticism, Ignac Alpar, including the Town Hall (Kossuth Square), the old-fashioned Hotel Korona (Dozsa Gyorgy Street) and Casino, as well as the County Hall (Hosok Square).
The intimate atmosphere of Zrinyi Ilona Street in the town centre is due to the Art Nouveau houses decorated with wonderful mosaics. A beautiful example of Art Nouveau is the Nyirvizi Palace (1 Szechenyi Street) on the first floor of which the rich medal and heraldic crest display of the Kallay Collection can be seen. In the courtyard of the Greek Orthodox Bishop’s Palace and the Academy of Theology (5 Bercsenyi street) a Byzantine chapel and a collection of religious art welcomes interested visitors.
