Salgotarjan
Salgotarjan - Description
Perhaps no other town in Hungary has changed as much as Salgotarjan. After the plans for creating a modern town were drafted, not only have whole rows of houses and streets disappeared, but some of the hillsides and slopes that impeded the expansion of the town were also levelled - as much as was feasible. Then, as building space grew scarce, architects drew up plans for higher and higher buildings.
The ambitious project to create a modern city centre, begun in the mid-sixties, was so successful that Salgotarjan was the first to receive the Janos Hild prize in 1968 for achievements in city architecture.
Here you can see that it is possible to have a new town that is large and modern, yet harmonious and very human at the same time. The fully up to date account in the galleries of the Nograd Historical Museum gives an accurate picture of the history of Salgotarjan and its surrounding area.
The Main Square is closed from the South by the lively crowded Pecsko shopping centre, designed by Jozsef Finta, one of the outstanding Hungarian architects. A large mosaic decorates the foreground of the big hall on the second floor of the Attila Jozsef County Cultural Centre, a building covered with a huge glass surface. The statue of the poet with a tragic destiny, Miklos Radnoti, one of the greatest poets of the 20th century Hungarian literature, can also be found on the Main Square. The statue is the work of the famous sculptor, Imre Varga.
Coal is no longer mined in Salgotarjan, but the town is proud to accept its past. The first underground mine museum in Hungary was opened in the Jozsef-shaft in 1965.
The ruins of Salgo castle built on the top of a 625-metre high basalt cone are the most romantic expression of a thousand years of history in Salgotarjan.
The castle of Somosko can also be visited from the Hungarian side.
