Coal is no longer mined in Salgotarjan, but the town is proud to accept its past. The first underground mine museum in Hungary was opened in the Jozsef-shaft in 1965.
The 280-metre long gallery, the adits (drainage shafts) left in their original condition, and the display of the methods and tools used in coal mining are of special interest. The museum is known all over Europe.
There is a historical exhibition in one of the official's flats from the neighbouring mining community, next to an exhibition site at ground level.
Address: Salgotarjan, 1. Zemlinszky Rezso street
Open: 01.04 - 30.09.,
Tuesday to Sunday: 10am. - 3pm.
