The ruins of Salgo castle built on the top of a 625-metre high basalt cone are the most romantic expression of a thousand years of history in Salgotarjan.
The Eastern and Southern sides of the castle could both be protected from the cleverly placed pentagonal bastion, the cistern would save the lives of the castle's defenders, while the walls of the former keep are still defying the passage of time. Kings and noblemen once owned the castle, but its name was immortalised in a poem entitled Salgo, by Sandor Petofi, the Hungarian lyricist of the 19th century, the poet of the 1848 Hungarian War of Independence, who died on the battlefield.
The dungeon of the castle offers a magnificent view over the surrounding area, and in the neighbourhood of the castle hill there are wonderful rocks and a ravishing variety of lava shapes.
