Siklos

Siklos - Description

The fortress of Siklos is one of the best-preserved medieval castles of Hungary in the southernmost town of the country. No Turkish guns destroyed its walls, neither were they blown up by the Austrian Emperor Leopold I, unlike all the other border fortresses of Hungary. This fortress preserves priceless objects from every epoch of its history that began in 1294; windows of the Romanesque age, the most of ornate balcony and a castle chapel from the 14-15th century Hungarian Gothic era. The Renaissance gate fortification with the drawbridge is an eloquent witness to the quality of medieval Hungarian architecture.
The prison museum, the stonework exhibition and the fortress museum demonstrating the history of glove making in Pecs have been housed in 18th century rooms. The most attractive memorabilia of Hungarian Gothic wall painting of the 15th century have been discovered by resorts in the sanctuary of the parish church. In recognition of their work, the town received the Europe Nostra Award for the restoration of the pentagon Mosque of Malkoc Bey (Vorosmarty Street).
Every year, the popular International Symposium of Ceramics is organised in the former Franciscan Monastery (2 Vajda J. Square). Another famous place of pilgrimage is the twin tower Baroque Franciscan church in the nearby village of Mariagyud.
