The first fortress was built in the 13th century on the solitary hill rising from the plains. It became a really exemplary residence in the 15th century in the possession of the powerful Garai family.
King Sigismund was kept in honourable confinement by an aristocratic group in the "U" shaped building. Early in the 16th century it became the estate of the Palatine Imre Perenyi. At this time splendid renaissance buildings were erected, a barbican was built, the outer bailey fortified.
Following a short siege the Turks captured the fortress in 1543, and held it till 1686.
During the Rakoczi insurrection it became for a while a "kuruc" rebel stronghold. Afterwards it lost all military importance.
Later it was converted in a Baroque style, and the wings were extended. Archaeological exploration of the crumbling, ownerless building started in the nineteen-fifties, after which it was restored as a national monument.
Legend has it that a giant snake guarded the treasures in the basement.
Places of interest: exhibitions in the Castle:
weapons of the "kuruc" epoch, waxworks related to the "A Tenkes kapitanya" (Captain of the Tenkes), a highly successful TV series (figures showing the rebel "kuruc" and the Habsburg "labanc" supporters). Dungeon, stone museum (lapidarium). Exhibition on the history and products of the Glove factory of Pecs. Modern art displays.
The exhibitions are open from May to October between 9am and 6pm, from November to April between 9am and 4pm (certain parts of the fortress can be visited also on Mondays).
The church of the former Franciscan monastery on the grounds of the outer fort has especially beautiful frescoes. In the monastery exhibitions of applied art can be seen.
The restored jami (a type of mosque, a Muslim temple) of Malkocs bey is an interesting memorial of the Turkish occupation.
The Villany wine region.
Events and activities: the Vincent-day wine-festival on January 22, vine stem consecration; Maypole celebration early in May; Castle Theatre performances in the summer; Grape-harvest; Chicken-paprikás Festival at the end of August.
