The Franciscans living in Sopron first built their Monastery in the centre of the town, then around 1280 their church, which is one of the greatest works of the Hungarian Gothic architecture. Jozsef II dissolved the monastic order in 1787 and the Church (popularly known as the Goat Church) became the Benedictine Monks' Church. Queens and a king had been coronated in the Church and it was the scene of numerous Parliament sessions.
Its elegant tower with pleasant architecture is the main characteristic of the Main Square. The masterwork and motives of the fresco painter, the lancet windows, and the unique Kapisztrán pulpit are extremely valuable.
The door (the style of Louis XVI.) of the Monastery linked to the Church on the south leads to the Chapter House. The Chapter House served as a house of prayers, then a burial chapel and finally as a Loretto Chapel. Archeological researches, unveiled the Gothic pillars, the interesting carved woodwork and parts of the Medieval frescos were discovered. The masks hidden in the leaf ornament on the pillar-heads ornamented with symbolic figures with human heads and animal bodies represent the main sins. This Chapter is the most beautiful work of Gothic architecture.
