The history of art regards Jozsef Horvath (1891-1961) the "Great painter of Sopron", the Great classic of aquarelle' and the "Poet of aquarelle". The artist later got the honorable name "Soproni" from his beloved town. He was not born in the town, but he dedicated his whole life to Sopron, which made him a true inhabitant of the town. Sopron owns and hosts his life-work, which is the basis of the permanent aquarelle exhibition presenting the most beautiful works of art.
The painter studied at the University of Fine Arts and in Nagybánya. He became the pioneer of aquarelle painting. The great credit of his life-work is the worthy equal status of aquarelle painting beside oil painting. He expressed himself by naturalism. Deep emotions and the spiritualization of material can be discovered in his works.
All his masterpieces are enduring, but his outstanding fame is due to his nude paintings and portraits. His unique talent is manifested in these valuable paintings. His inheritance is exhibited in the Caesar House. His widow established the museum from the inheritance.
