Beside the man-made values of Sopron, the picturesque natural environment touches the visitors as well.
Sopron is situated at the meeting point of three different botanical and zoological regions, which ensures the extreme richness in species of the nearby forests. The Karoly Lookout Tower is the focus of walking on the pathways many wonders of nature can be discovered.
The first lookout tower made of wood was constructed by Karoly Romwalter, the landscape architecture, at private expense in 1876. On the first floor of the new, 23 meter-high lookout tower made of ragged-stone, there is an exhibition introducing the work of three natural scientists of European fame, Pal Kitaibel, Endre Gombocz and Zoltan Karpati as well as the main characteristics of the Sopron Nature Conservation Area.
The splendid view of Sopron with the Szarhalmi forest, and the shimmering water of Lake Ferto can be enjoyed from the two upper floors of the Tower. The picturesque view is completed with the silhouette of the Wienerwald on the left and the snowy mountains of Schneeberg on the right.
