Among the dozens of exhibitions in Sopron, the Central Mining Museum, the greatest and most complex mining collection in Hungary is unique.
The Baroque Esterhazy Palace is the right place for the valuable collection. After visiting the exhibition, the visitor can have a rest in the small Baroque music pavilion of the bulwark garden behind the Museum. The exhibition was awarded the title "Museum of the Year" in 2001. Besides the relics of the noble metal mining which were famous in Europe through centuries, the exhibition shows the results and the technical accomplishments of the last century.
The most interesting part of the exhibition is the mineshaft from the beginning of the 20th century, which may be visited. The ancient quartz mine rebuilt in the original size, the narrow mine shafts of the Medieval mine, the greatest technical innovations of the last century, and the inner parts of the hydraulic buckler can be seen as well.
Beside the operating maquette of the machines, the interesting collection of shimmering minerals is also worth visiting. The old documentaries and feature films presented at the cinema room in summer are also very popular.
The exhibition presenting in process the history of the Hungarian mining through a thousand years offers the possibility to spend a good time for both domestic and foreign guests. The exhibition is at the visitor's disposal with German, English and Slovakian guidance and information.
