The Sopron wine region is located in Gyor-Moson-Sopron county on the lower slopes of the Sopron Hills, on the line of hillocks along the small stream called the Ferto, on the undulations of the Ikva Plain (part of the Sopron-Vas flat land) and on the slopes of the Vas and Koszeghegyalja mountain.
The wine of Sopron became famous in Europe in the 12th - 15th centuries. Until the end of the 19th century they grew mostly white varieties here, but since then the red wine varieties have dominated. This wine region has two sub-districts: the Sopron and the Koszeg.
It lies at the foothills of the Alps, and it's climatic conditions are moderate. The annual fluctuation of temperature is smaller, summers are cooler and wetter than the country's average, and the winters are less severe. In the spring they often have gusty winds. The unique characteristic of this region is that the taller hills surrounding the area and the large water surface of Lake Ferto have a favourable effect on the micro- and mesoclimate. The soil is very varied.
The Kekfrankos gained ground in this area after the phylloxera disaster, and its importance hasn't diminished. The Kekfrankos of Sopron is rich in colour, has a deep red appearance, and is generally more vigorous and tarter than the same variety from other parts of the country. Of the white wine grapes the most characteristic is the Zold Veltelini, while the wine made from the Early Red Veltelini is a local curiosity.
