Szarvas

Szarvas - Description

The Szarvasi Arboretum, which houses in its 82-hectare park more than 1,600 species of trees and bushes, including many exotic ones, is one of the main sights of this town on the banks of the river Koros. This arboretum was established at the end of the 19th century, following the example of the Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna. Visitors can use the manicured lawn of this area-also called “Pepi Gaerden”-for relaxation and sun bathing.

In the 200-year-old Hungarian agricultural school founded by the internationally known scientist, farmer and teacher, Lutheran pastor Samuel Tessedik (1742-1820), a museum (1 Vajda Peter Street) of the town and the ethnography of the region has also been established.
The still functioning dry mill (1 Ady Endre Street) is one of the three surviving dry mills in the country, which grind meal and cereals. The Slovakian regional house (1/A Hoffmann Janos Street) represents a peasant’s home of the 19th century showing approximately a thousand objects.

Hungary’s newest national park is that of the Koros-Maros region –a world of alkaline puszta (steppe) and flood-basin forests. The stretch of river backwater named Holt-Koros (Dead Koros) with a water surface 30 km long, is the fifth largest lake in the country. It is an ideal recreation area for families, children’s groups, river ramblers, and also an excellent angling place with 33 species of fish to catch.
