Szecseny
Szecseny - Description
Walking in the small town on the banks of the Ipoly, with its peaceful atmosphere, you would hardly suspect that this was once the scene of key historical events.
The first known written reference to Szecseny is in a document that dates back to 1219. It describes a villager who sued seven of his neighbours, demanding payment in marks to the value of ten oxen. The trial was to be settled by "God's judgement", ordeal by fire, but the parties finally agreed in the sum of three marks.
The large and finely shaped baroque palace of Szecseny, with an active museum within its walls, was built in the 18th century, but the building stones used come from the ruins of a castle built in the 15th century.
The earlier castle survived many battles, and within its walls Ferenc Rakoczi II was proclaimed ruling prince by the National Assembly in September 1705.
