The most important building in the country between the 11th and 16th centuries was Saint Stephen's Basilica: the king's throne and the symbol of his rule were here. The coronation church was blown up by the Turks in 1602 and only the foundations can be seen today.
In the National Memorial - one of the most important groups of monuments in the country, with its medieval ruin garden and Coronation Square - the sarcophagus of Saint Stephen (1000-1038) stands in the Mausoleum decorated with historical secco.
In the Bone Chamber are buried the relics of the kings. In Prince Geza square, a castle and a small quadripartite chapel already stood in 970. Its ground plan, made of white stones, can be seen on the pavement. King Bela IV, who reigned during the thirteenth-century Tartar invasion, had the Bishop's Cathedral built as a royal seat before moving the capital to Buda. The skull relic of Saint Stephen is kept in the baroque Cathedral.
