The roots of grape and wine culture in Szekszard can be traced back to Celtic times; the ancient name of Szekszard , Alisca is also of Celtic origin.
The climate here is sub-mediterranean. The meso- and microclimates that have formed in the hollows and valleys of the line of hills are particularly suitable, especially for the red wine grape varieties. The surface of the Szekszard hills is covered by loess. The area is characterised by an exceptionally varied landscape, cut through by many forms of loess erosion: gorges, escarpments, rings, pyramids, ravines etc.
In earlier times the main variety of grape was the Kadarka. It?s leading position was only changed in the large plantings that started in the years around 1960. Is was gradually overtaken by varieties which can be safely grown on higher areas, such as the red wine varieties Kekfrankos, Kekoporto, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot.
The region is characterised by soft harmonious white wines and deep-coloured, full-bodied, velvety red wines of a spicy palate and excellent quality. The only place, apart from Eger, where the name Bikaver (Bull?s Blood) may be used is in the Szekszard region. The Szekszard Bikaver (Bull?s Blood) is traditionally made by blending the Kadarka, the Kekfrankos and the Kekoporto varieties.
