Szekszard

Szekszard - Description

This romantic small town is bordered by seven hills and all of them offer fiery, traditional wines. Quite a few well-known musical works of Ferenc Liszt were written here in the Augusz House (36-40 Szechenyi Street, with a memorial plaque on the wall), when he was paying visits to his friends.
The sculpted portrait of the famous Hungarian composer and pianist, together with piano, is displayed in the Ferenc Liszt Memorial Exhibition in the Old County Hall (1 Bela Square). Another memorial exhibition has been arranged to commemorate the famous son of the city, the great 20th century poet and translator, Mihaly Babits (13 Babits M. Street).
The Baroque St. Ladislaus Church that stands in Bela Square, in the medieval core of the city, is thought to be the largest one-nave church in Europe. At the same place you can see one of the best classical county halls in Hungary, with the preserved remnants of the Benedictine Abbey Church from the 11th century in its courtyard.
The history of the town stretches back more than a thousand years and is portrayed in the local history and archaeology exhibition of the ‘Mor Wosinsky’ Museums (26 Martirok Square). The House of Arts arranged in the former Synagogue building (20 Martirok Square) organises exhibitions from time to time and the only German-language Theatre -the Deutsche Buhne Ungarn- functions in this city (Garay Square). The cluster of grapes in the emblem of the city (its usually large and original version can be found on Mount Kalvaria) symbolises the fact that Szekszard is the centre of the famous red-wine growing region of the same name.
