Szerencs
Szerencs - Description
Szerencs belongs to the settlements of Hegyalja (the south eastern and southern border of the Zemplen Mountains) and was a gateway town and a point of intersection for important trade roads and wars, from the early feudal period.
For example, the Transylvanian salt road coming from Tokaj and leading towards Pest-Buda went through this region.
The geographical position of Szerencs made it important to build a castle. The place chosen for this building is a very peculiar one, since people usually look for natural heights when they want to build a castle.
But in this case the castle, which today is surrounded by the town, perhaps was built on a filled island in low marshland.
