The first mention of the castle was in 1247. Initially it was a Benedictine monastery that was transformed into a fortress in the year 1556.
In 1603 it was enlarged and a throne room was placed in the main building. In the 18th and 19th century its owners reconstructed it and it became a Baroque castle in style; its moats were filled.
Two princes were elected in this town; the diet took an oath of allegiance to the Hungarian principality of Istvan Bocskai, and this was the place where Zsigmond Rakoczi was proclaimed Prince of Transylvania. The beautiful Renaissance elements of the fortified castle date from that time.
