Szolnok

Szolnok - Description

The city lying at the junction the rivers Tisza and Zagyva has been an important crossing place on the Tisza for 900 years.
It has the oldest railway-station in the country. The present railway station is one of the most modern in Central Europe, its bulk rest on 1100 piles sunk 11 meters deep in the ground. The characteristic monuments under protection are the city Hall Kossuth Square) and Lutheran Church (Keller Gyula Street) representing Eclecticism, while the Szigligeti Theatre (1 Tisza Park) is an interesting attempt to amalgamate Art Nouveau with modern style elements.
The domed neo-Baroque buildings of Hotel Tisza and Medicinal Bath exude a special athmospere (the thermal water is recommended for the relief of rheumatic and gynaecological complaints as well as for the treatment of locomotor disorders; gastric complaints are eased by drinking the waters).

The Bath can be reached with a pleasant walk along the waterside promenade where the neo-Gothic building and larch-wood pulpit of the Calvinist church deserve attention.
A renowned place of interest is the Artists’ Colony of Szolnok established in 1902, producing eminent personalities of modern Hungarian painting (4 Gutenberg Square). The most significant public collection in the city, the Janos Damjanich Museums (4 Kossuth L. Square) bears the name of the victorious General of the 1848-1849 battle of Szolnok against the Austrians. The museum presents the history of Jasz-Nagykun-Szolnok county as reflected in archaeology and ethnography. In the Szolnok Gallery (2 Templom Street) housed in the wonderful former Synagogue, temporary exhibitions and concerts are organised. Notable monuments of the city are the 18th century Baroque Franciscan church is the town centre (on the altarpiece of which the painter pictured the 18th century Hungarian festive costume) and the former Franciscan Monastery (8 Templom Street).
The Open-air Hydrographic Museum (Miller pumping station) offers an overview of the water management of the Middle Tisza Region in the last 200 years. Szolnok is also the town of water sport. On the Tisza Backwater an international rowing course has built, there is an open-air pool, and there are cruise boats on the Tisza. The campsite of Tisza-liget is much frequented and the general sporting life is very active.
