Szombathely
Szombathely - Description
Inhabitants of Savaria founded in 43 A.D enjoyed the same rights as the citizens of Rome. They built a marvellous city from the profits of the Amber Road passing through the town. Two archaeological excavations help us visualise the luxurious life style here.
Relics of the forum can be seen in the Garden of Ruins (1-3 Templom square). The details of the largest mosaic of the Lieutenant-Governor's Palace - the largest in the whole of Pannonia - of the foundation walls of a 9th-century fortress built of Roman stones, of an almost 50-metre section of the 2000-year-old Amber Road, of the shrine to Mercury, of the public bath and the customs house are kept in the Savaria Museum (9 Kisfaludy Sandor street).
The 2nd-century Isis shrine of the Iseum garden of ruins (1 Rakoczi street) will again serve after reconstruction as background for the Iseum Summer Open-air Festival.
The ceremonial hall of the Zopf-style bishop's palace (3 Berzsenyi square), the so-called Sala Terrena, is one of the best Baroque halls in the country.
The Diocesan Museum is worth visiting, for its lavish collection of ecclesiastic art. In the Dorfmeister Hall of the Diocesan Library and Archive (1 Szily Janos street) you can see the works of this famous painter.
The exhibition of the Szombathely Gallery (12 Rakoczi street) gives you a taste of contemporary Hungarian art.
Thirty-seven buildings from 27 villages have been included in the Village Museum of Vas County (30 Arpad street) with the aim of preserving the characteristic relics of popular architecture. The museum is in an environment of lakes which are equally good for boating and angling. Apart from the houses, a belfry, a blacksmith's workshop and a water-mill show the rural way of life; professional shows are frequently held, and fairs take place on festive days.
The Kamoni Arboretum (7 Szent Imre herceg street) is the largest arboretum in Hungary; its highlights are more than a thousand species of pine, 2.000 types of deciduous trees, and it boasts of an enormous quantity of rhododendron bushes blossoming in May and representing 50 species.
