This region near the western border includes 3 counties: Győr-Moson-Sopron, Vas and Zala counties.
The region which can be found in the north-western part of Transdanubia once it was covered by the Pannonian inland sea, then as a consequence the banking up the Little Plain, the Szigetköz, the Rábaköz, the Pannonhalmi-hills, Sopron-hills, Kőszegi-hills, such as Kemeneshát, Vasi- Hills, the Sag-hill, Zala-hills, or the highest point in the Zala-hills: Bezerédi-hill was created. Rivers, lakes, major streams (Raba, Danube, Zala) and smaller streams (Pinka, Gyöngyös, Répce és az Ikva) play an important role in the region.
Pannonia was a province of The Roman Empire, which cultural influence is still felt in many areas. A unique treasure of the deep underground is the thermal water. After discovering it, a Roman-based bathing culture evolved in this region. The culture of grapes and wine also goes back to ancient times, the tradition is still preserved in the three wineregions. In later ages more noble families have chosen this area as a residence, so this region boasts more beautiful castles such as the Esterhazy Palace in Fertőd, the Szechenyi Palace in Nagycenk, Nadasdy Castle in Sarvar, in Körmend, Egervár or Zalacsány.
Győr-Moson-Sopron county
The county is rich in cultural relics, two world heritage sites are also located here. The Fertő-region, involving two countries natural and cultural relics attract tourists, our country's famous tourist resort. The Benedictine Abbey's thousand years of history fascinate every visitor, grapes and wine culture has developed in the area due to the favorable climate. More towns of this county are established by Romans, and crossed by the famous Amber Road, which was the by-pass of north-south trade. As a border-area this county was subjected to constant threats in the Middle Ages, which had not only disadvantages, but also advantages.
Vas County
The climate is slightly cooler than average in Hungary, but due to its clean, good air quality popular holiday resorts developed. Many small, mostly man-made lake can be found here, a popular resting place for fishermen. Since ancient times inhabited the area, the county seat (Szombathely) was the military center during the Roman Empire. Significant relics of the Roman era remained, such as the Isis Shrine which is a treasure of religion in Szombathely, the Amber Road which crossed over the province from north to south. Savaria Carnival is held in August each year, creates the festivity atmosphere of the Roman times, has grown into a nationwide event. The costume parade, theatrical performances, slave market, adventure castle for children are complemented by contemporary dishes and drinks.
Zala county
Unspoiled nature, living folklore, rural hospitality, spa and thermal baths, hiking and recreation opportunities, landscape Göcsej. Zala County has major livestock, orchards and vineyards even today. This is the second most wooded county in Hungary. The country's best forest pine, beech and oak trees are located in this county. Fawn and boar substance is prime, the deer-substance of Zala is world famous. Popular sport in the county firmly is the hunt.
