Zalaegerszeg
Zalaegerszeg - Description
On Deak square, on the site of the former border castle, commemorated by a memorial stone, stands the county hall building, which houses the county court today. It was designed by an Austrian architect, Franz Allio. It is a listed Baroque building. This is where Ferenc Deak, and the martyred Laszlo Csany started their political careers. In the middle of the square there is a statue of Ferenc Deak, by Miklos Vay. On the western side, the square is bordered by the Deak Ferenc County Library, and to the east by the Gocsej Museum, which was originally built as a savings bank in 1890.
The Baroque church was built between 1750 and 1760. Opposite the church is the priests' residence and offices.
Between this building and the church is Balatoni road, which passes the sports hall accommodating some 4,700 spectators.
Opposite the church house stands the Arany Barany Hotel, which adjoins the County Archives and a three-floor office building. First it was a single-storey house built in 1765 as living quarters, for army officers. Its first floor was added in the last century, the second early this century. Passing the building we can see a Janos Beres relief of Istvan Szechenyi unveiled in 1991, and Janos Nemeth's ceramic relief commemorating the soldiers of Zala.
Walking along the busiest street of the town, first we see the post office with the former hospital, "ispita", next to it, which is now a bank. On one side of the building Janos Nemeth's ceramic relief of St Roch, one of the patron saints of healing. We can see the town hall, with Bela Toth's equestrian statue of the poet and general, Miklos Zrinyi in front of it. The statue was put in place in 1989. Behind the town hall is the Town Concert and Exhibition Hall, which was built in 1904 as a synagogue.
The two most frequented museums of the town are the Gocsej Village Museum, and the Hungarian Museum of the Oil Industry next to it.
Visitors are offered three choices of excursions in three different directions from the town.
Four kilometres away from the centre along the road to Lake Balaton in the Csacs district, the 84-hectare arboretum shows specimens of all the trees of Hungary. Along the road to Gocsej we reach Alsoerdo, a forest which is a favourite place for walks and picnics.
The television tower with its cafe on top of the hill has been open to visitors since 1975. From its observation platform it is possible to see as far as the foothills of the Austrian Alps. The "valley of azaleas" between the television tower and Alsoerdei road or road offers an exquisite glimpse of these botanical rarities.
In the northern part of the town, north of the River Zala is Gebarti lake, which was formed by damming a brook in 1975. The pleasant immediate surroundings offer a beach and a favourable location for a workshop for craftsmen.
